  • Boracay Beach Soccer
  • The 8th San Miguel Super Dry beach soccer tournament was again a great event. Teams from the island, Manila, Iloilo and even the USA competed. The tournament was won by Team USA followed by the team from Barotac, Iloilo.

  • BFI's Plastic Bottle Buy-back Scheme
  • More than 330 empty mineral water bottles were bought back at 10 centavos each every Saturday under the new project of the Boracay oundation Incorporated. Dubbed as a "buy-back" scheme, the project aims to present a solution to the
mounding problem of empty bottles littering the island. Companies like Viva, First, Hidden Spring and Nature's Spring have agreed to buy their bottles back. The bottles are collected every Saturday through BFI's Eco-Shed in Balabag.

  • DOT-CUI evaluate project in Boracay
  • The Canada-Philippines Cooperative Program on Sustainable Development for Boracay Island was evaluated by stakeholders, the Department of Tourism and members of the Canadian Urban Institute last December 17-19. Two meetings were held at the Seawind Resort with the private sectors, local government officials and members of the LGU in Malay. Participants in both meetings stressed their belief that the DOT-CUI initiatives have been successful to date and there is a strong need for the program to continue in the island. Plans for more capability- building workshops, environmental monitoring and organizational reviews are under way. Outcomes of these activities will also help support proposals which will be drafted for the continuation of the program in the Island
    for the remainder of 1999.
